Thousands of Australians rally in support of Palestine
In cities across Australia, tens of thousands of people rallied in support of the Palestinian people. The time is significant as it marks the 73rd anniversary of Nakba (Catastrophe) May 13 1948; the loss of the Palestinian lands to the zionist entity – Israel.
People in anger at the latest atrocities perpetrated by the Israeli military, with bombs,tanks and missiles on the tiny city of Gaza (with a population density of 13,000 people per square kilometre) with casualties of 195 people dead; including 55 children with nearly one thousand wounded.
At the Sydney rally, the First Nations speaker welcomed the crowd and began the call From the river to the sea , Palestine will be free!
The second speaker was a Palestinian survivor of the the Nakba and identified the situations of Palestinian and First Nation peoples of Australia as identical. “We are the indigenous people of Palestine and you are the Palestinians of Australia”
The state of Israel was installed on the Palestinian lands in 1948, with the support of the western imperialist powers; the United States, Britain and France to create a permanent base in the oil rich, Middle East, despite the resistance of the Palestinian people and other nations.
After World War II, the Arab nations were experiencing popular anti-colonial struggles so that the need for a western financed, armed and populated colony in the area was paramount. Soon anyone who identified as a Jew was allowed to migrate to Israel and become a citizen. Millions of Jewish settlers have flooded in from Europe , America and the middle east to enjoy the privileged life in a never ceded, colonial land. This irony is seemingly lost on the zionist Jews whose forebears suffered centuries of massacres, exile and finally the Nazi holocaust.
Since the Nakba, countless military campaigns and pogroms have been committed against the native Palestinians – massacres, mass forced removal of towns ,villages and families by the Israeli state and armed groups of fascist settlers.
Despite this, Palestinians in small vulnerable enclaves, continue to stand up to this onslaught and are an inspiration to oppressed nations of the the world.
