Sunday August 3rd 2025, saw mass action across Australia in support for Palestine. People frustrated by federal and state governments support for Israel, used the opportunity to voice their anger.
In Sydney, the Minns government together with police stopped over 100,00 marchers who crossed the Sydney Harbour Bridge from reaching their ultimate destination, the U.S. consulate, citing concern for public safety. Not surprisingly, public safety was of little concern for the police who assaulted Greens activist Hannah Thomas outside armaments manufacturer SEC at Belmore in Sydney leaving her blinded in one eye.
Likewise more than 100,000 Melbourne marchers were blocked from crossing the King St bridge by the Victorian riot squad police. More rallies were held in in cities and towns across Australia.
In essence governments fear the mass of public opinion and use all measures -legislation, courts and the armed force of the police to shut down dissent. What was demonstrated on that Sunday was the people when mobilised are a powerful force.
