The world witnessed important messages from the commemoration in Beijing, of the 80th anniversary of victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression.
The first message was historical and reiterated the important role of the Chinese people’s resistance to Japanese imperialism from1931-45. World War II was much more than the Battle of Britain, D-Day or Pearl Harbour, which comprise the usual diet of commentary and films in Australia.

What also was evident was the confident role for China in defending its sovereignty and standing up to threats. Xi Jinping in his speech asserted that China has a new vitality and was ready to take a greater role in the pursuit of international harmony.
Another message was that so many nations have close relations with China. This was evident in the turn out of international leaders in Beijing. Curiously Foreign Affairs Minister Wong and Defence Minister Marles chose to visit Japan at this time.
