An invigorated United Nations, giving voice to developing nations, one that espoused true multi-lateralism and not the bully boy tactics of those who espouse “exceptionalism”. This was the message delivered to a meeting to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the United Nations by Chinese President Xi Jinping.

The major proponent of exceptionalism is the U.S.A. The U.S. is not party to the International Criminal Court (ICC) , the UN International Law of the Sea, UNESCO, the International Court of Justice , the Paris Climate Accords and recently the World Health Organisation (WHO). As the biggest economy in the world, with the biggest military budget and number of military bases the actions of the U.S. have had serious impacts on all continents.

Australian government statements on the UN recently have become shallow echoes of the big hegemon. In votes and measures, it’s usually “the west” versus the rest.  And we are voting and working with the wrong side of history.

Progressive Australians should embrace a stronger, active United Nations, to give equal voice to all nations. For a vigorous organisation to take on new roles for all the problems facing the world in public health, development, stability and  for peace.
